A Big Year Behind Us, and Another to Come

2022 is nearly behind us, and we have a lot to look back on and be proud of thanks to the hard work of the women and men who operate and maintain our system while helping to prepare it for an even brighter future.

This month, we finished signal cutover work at 16 grade crossings to prepare them for electrified service. We hired a contractor that will provide Wi-Fi on board our new fleet to meet a major need for our riders. And the Holiday Train, a beloved Peninsula tradition, made its annual run, delighting thousands of families and collecting gifts for local charities.

Thank you for your continued interest in the work we’re doing at Caltrain. I look forward to sharing many more of our accomplishments over the coming year. Please make it a priority to stay safe during this holiday season.

Electrification Project Releases Year in Review Video

Caltrain Electrification made tremendous progress in 2022. This year's achievements set the stage for major testing and construction milestones as we prepare for electrified service in 2024. Just take a look at some of these highlights from the past year:

  • Completion of all 3,092 foundations along the corridor, providing necessary infrastructure for the wires that will power the new electric trains.
  • Four new electric trainsets arrived on Caltrain property, enabling the start of critical testing on the corridor.
  • The launch of a public outreach campaign to educate passengers, residents, and businesses about staying safe around the new electric wires.
  • We held 22 outreach events and shared 70,000 mailers and flyers.

Caltrain Hires Broadband Provider

Caltrain has awarded two contracts to Nomad Digital, Inc. of Hayward, Calif. for Broadband Communications Services. Nomad will be installing, operating and maintaining Caltrain’s broadband services, both to provide valuable wireless connectivity between our new electric train fleet and central control, as well as for public-facing Wi-Fi. The broadband solution will allow Caltrain to launch long-awaited public Wi-Fi on board its new electric fleet that will run along its San Francisco-San Jose rail corridor.

Caltrain Electrification Receives $43 Million

Caltrain will receive $43 million in federal funding as part of the recent omnibus spending bill, which passed Congress and is expected to be signed by President Biden. The funding will help fill the funding gap for Caltrain’s Electrification project, which is scheduled to be completed in fall 2024. Of the federal funding, $10M was secured by Senator Dianne Feinstein and U.S. Senator Alex Padilla as a community project and $33M was included as part of the Federal Transit Administration’s Capital Investment Grant Program for projects with existing Full Funding Grant Agreements.

Redwood City Transit District Approved

Caltrain worked closely with the City of Redwood City as it planned for a future downtown Transit District that will include a grade separated and expanded railway, including a new elevated Redwood City Caltrain Station. City Council approval of the Transit District in November helps advance Caltrain’s long-term Service Vision to increase capacity and better serve our riders and the community.

Holiday Train Makes Annual Trek Down Corridor

On Saturday, December 3, and Sunday, December 4, the Holiday Train returned to bring good tidings and cheer to families from San Francisco to the South Bay as part of its annual toy drive. The Holiday Train, decorated with more than 75,000 glittering lights, visited nine Caltrain stations in San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties over that weekend, putting on a live show for crowds of thousands throughout the corridor. This cherished tradition offered an opportunity to donate new toys or books to local children whose families are struggling to make ends meet. Caltrain was proud to once again partner with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program and The Salvation Army to help make the season brighter for everyone.

Thanks to Board Members Stone and Hendricks

The last Board meeting marked the end of the tenure of two of our Board members, Charles Stone and Glenn Hendricks. Both of them gave their time and experience freely, and helped to ensure that Caltrain was serving the needs of the people it serves. We thank them for their time and dedication, knowing their efforts will be appreciated for years to come.

In light of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the Bay Area, Caltrain is monitoring the situation and following local public health agencies and CDC guidance regarding public meetings.
Caltrain is implementing a bold service vision for the future with a series of infrastructure and planning projects to modernize the system. Central among these projects is Electrification, which lays the foundation for a faster, greener, cleaner, and more reliable system for everyone.
